Join in Operation Transformation walks this Saturday

RTÉ’s Operation Transformation is teaming up with the Irish Sports Council to organise a number of special National Walks in 42 locations all around Ireland this Saturday, including two in Westmeath.

Local groups receive funding under Go for Life Small Grant Scheme

Minister of State for Sport and Tourism Michael Ring has today announced The Go for Life Small Grant Scheme recipients. The scheme encourages older people to be more active. Some 1,000 groups and clubs around Ireland will get grants under the scheme to get Ireland's older population moving.

Providing physical activity opportunities for some 8,000 people through 76 locally delivered sports programmes, an additional 7,000 females through 12 Women in Sport initiatives, 400 people with a disability participating locally, supplying information to 520 clubs / organisations and some 11,000 people contacting the Partnership for general and sports specific information were just some of the highlights of the 2012 annual report presented to board of the Mayo Sports Partnership recently. The boards function is to oversee the workings of the Sports Partnership and comprises representatives from local agencies, community and sporting organisations within the county.

An Post Tour of Sligo proving a popular choice

The An Post Tour of Sligo 2013 hits the roads of Sligo on the May Bank Holiday weekend and so far interest level suggests that the event will have a record entry. To date close on 1,000 cyclists have registered, and with numbers capped at 2,000 those wishing to cycle in scenic Sligo on Sunday. May 5 are advised to register early to avoid disappointment. Individuals new to the sport and more seasoned cyclists are signing up for the various events with the choice of routes including the 60km Lough Gill Circuit, the 100km Innisfree Tour, and the 160km Ox Mountain Challenge.
